New Tesla Model Y Performance Spotted Testing at the Nürburgring

Tesla’s long-awaited Performance variant of the refreshed Model Y has been spotted undergoing testing at the famed Nürburgring racetrack in Germany. The sighting offers the first real glimpse of what to expect from the high-performance version of Tesla’s best-selling vehicle, following the earlier release of the redesigned “Juniper” Model Y earlier this year.

The new Model Y officially launched in late 2024 with a sleeker design, improved materials, ambient lighting, and upgraded range and efficiency. However, only the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variants have been made available so far. Fans of the top-of-the-line Performance version have been waiting patiently, with Tesla saying it wouldn’t be arriving until later this year.

Performance Model Shows Off Upgrades

The camouflaged prototype seen testing at the Nürburgring by Carscoops features several telltale enhancements that differentiate it from the standard trims. These include a noticeably lower ride height and a set of large, aggressive wheels that appear to be very similar to the 21-inch Arachnid rims used on the Model S Plaid, wrapped in Pirelli P Zero rubber. A familiar trunk lip spoiler is also present, although much larger than the previous version found on the Model Y Performance, along with the signature red brake calipers included on all of Tesla’s Performance variants.

Though the front bumper appears unchanged from the Long Range and RWD models, additional aero modifications could still be introduced on the final production version. Inside, the presence of bolstered sport seats — likely borrowed from the Model 3 Performance — and other software-based performance enhancements are expected.

Power and Specs

While Tesla hasn’t released any official specs yet, the new Model Y Performance is expected to mirror the Model 3 Performance in key areas. That means dual-motor all-wheel drive, 510 horsepower, and around 554 lb-ft of torque, powered by a 79 kWh battery pack. This should allow for a 0-60 mph time of roughly 3.2 seconds — a slight improvement over the 3.5 seconds claimed by the previous 470-hp version. Range is estimated to remain around 290 miles (466 km), unless a larger battery is introduced.

The prototype’s appearance at the Nürburgring also suggests Tesla is continuing to prioritize track readiness. An adaptive suspension system — with selectable modes for comfort or sportier driving — is expected, along with enhancements to the steering feel and heat management systems.

Pricing and Release Timing

Although Tesla has not confirmed a launch timeline, it is still expected the new Model Y Performance will debut by late 2025. Pricing is anticipated to start around US$55,000 USD, roughly US$7,000 above the Long Range AWD version. Pricing in Canada is anyone’s guess considering the tariff situation, but if current pricing holds, expect a price close to C$100,000.
