New low-cost alternative to HomeLink coming soon to Tesla to open and close your garage door

HomeLink is a wireless control system for your garage door (or gates) that used to be included on all Tesla vehicles, but is now an expensive $400CAD ($300USD) option that can be added after purchase.

Now there will soon be a much cheaper alternative for Tesla owners as Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed on Twitter the automaker will be adding integrated controls for garage door openers that have WiFi capability.

Many new garage door openers available on the market today come with WiFi controls. Don’t worry if yours doesn’t, there are a number of aftermarket options available to retrofit yours, some less than $100, like the MyQ Smart Garage Door Opener from Chamberlain (Amazon – $74.99) or the Refoss Smart Wi-Fi Garage Door Opener currently on sale for $50.99 on Amazon.

With the new integrated WiFi controls, you will be able to ditch the remote control clipped to your visor or tucked into your center console. Hopefully the new feature will come with the ability to automatically open and close your garage door based on location, much like the feature available for auto-folding mirrors.
