Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) will soon be integrating a fleet of Tesla Cybertrucks. During the annual State of the Department address on Tuesday, Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill announced that the LVMPD will introduce 10 Cybertrucks into its operations, including a specially armored SWAT unit.
One of the most notable details of the announcement is that these Cybertrucks will not impact the department’s budget. According to Sheriff McMahill, an anonymous donor funded the entire fleet, allowing LVMPD to expand its resources without the use of public funds.

During the announcement, Sheriff McMahill emphasized the Cybertruck’s safety features, stating that the vehicle’s exoskeleton provides superior protection for officers. “The cop inside will be safe no matter what—it will stop bullets,” he assured attendees.
Beyond safety and efficiency, the Cybertruck fleet is expected to serve as a unique tool for community outreach. Sheriff McMahill highlighted how the presence of these vehicles will spark curiosity and conversation. “Imagine when we’re out and charging these things—officers will be approached by people from all over the community to see this thing,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to inject humanity, increase our partnership, and develop relationships.” (via Fox5Vegas)
The Cybertruck deployment is part of a broader initiative by LVMPD to integrate new technologies into law enforcement. Plans were also unveiled for semi-autonomous drones equipped with gunshot detection systems that can rapidly respond to active shooter situations.
With Las Vegas leading the way in police EV adoption, the success of this program could set a precedent for departments nationwide. If the Cybertrucks prove effective in operational use—whether through reduced maintenance costs, enhanced officer safety, or increased public engagement, or all of the above, other law enforcement agencies may be quick to follow suit.
