GM to Launch “Eyes Off” Autonomous Driving Feature in 2028, Google Gemini AI in 2026

While other automakers are starting to back off Level 4 and Level 5 autonomous driving tech in the North American market, GM is jumping in with “Eyes Off”.

Eyes Off is the next iteration of Super Cruise and will provide users with an autonomous driving experience. GM is using a combination of Lidar, radars and cameras to create an all-encompassing autonomous driving system that would allow drivers to read a book or even watch a movie while moving.

Initially, the tech will only work on selected highways in the United States but will expand as permitted by State Authorities.

The new software is demanding and will require a computing platform capable of handling massive amounts of data and making decisions in a split second. GM is planning to launch the new feature with the Escalade IQ, whose new central computer will have 10 times the over-the-air software update capacity, 1000 times the bandwidth, and 35 times the AI performance compared to the current Super Cruise vehicles.

Additionally, GM announced that starting in 2026, its vehicles will also include conversational AI through a partnership with Google Gemini. The AI software will allow drivers to send and draft messages, plan complex routes with stops, and prepare for a meeting while on the go. GM also confirmed they are planning to launch its own AI model, connected by OnStar, which should launch with Eyes Off in 2028.
