General Motors (GM) has reportedly axed the base model of the GMC Hummer EV, dubbed the EV2, which was slated for a release this spring.
Initially launched with much fanfare back in October 2020, the Hummer EV marked GM’s foray into the electric vehicle (EV) market with a model lineup that promised to blend the iconic ruggedness of the Hummer with the sustainability and performance of modern electric drivetrains.
The EV2 model was supposed to begin production soon, but had been delayed. Now according to a report from GM Authority, citing unnamed industry sources, the EV2 appears to have been dropped from the 2025 model year as well. This move has been interpreted as a sign of GM’s evolving strategy towards focusing on higher-end models of the Hummer EV, which have consistently commanded premium prices and showcased the brand’s latest technology and performance capabilities.
The EV2 model was poised to be the entry point into the Hummer EV lineup, offering a more accessible price point at US$79,995. It promised to deliver a dual-motor setup producing 625 horsepower and 7,400 lb-ft of torque, all while maintaining a 250 mile (402km) range on a single charge.
To get it to its lower price point, the EV2 would have been without some of the more advanced features found in its pricier counterparts, such as the Crabwalk, adaptive air suspension, and four-wheel steering.
As a result, the GMC Hummer EV lineup for 2024 now starts with the EV2X model, priced at US$98,845, and extends to the luxurious Omega Edition, with prices soaring up to US$150,295 for the pickup variant.
Despite the setback of the EV2 model’s cancellation, the Hummer EV has shown promising signs of demand, with GM reporting sales of 1,668 trucks in the first quarter of 2024. This follows a pattern of gradual sales increase since the vehicle’s launch, showcasing the market’s appetite for high-performance electric vehicles, albeit at a premium price point.
