Giga Texas installs and begins testing fourth Giga Press

Just as Giga Texas celebrates building 1,000 Model Ys in one week, crews have installed and begun testing the factory’s fourth Giga Press machine.

The massive casting machine was spotted in an early morning drone flyover by Joe Tegtmeyer (@JoeTegtmeyer). With the early morning light Tegtmeyer’s drone was able to see inside the casting area of factory, revealing the fourth IDRA Giga Press installed alongside the first three Giga Press machines.

Unfortunately this is not the 9,000 ton Giga Press that will produce the castings for the Cybertruck. That massive machine is not expected to arrive in Texas until later this year after it was unveiled in Italy in June.

Instead, this is Tesla’s 6,100 ton Giga Press used to make front and rear single-piece castings for the Model Y.

The testing of this fourth Giga Press might explain why we have seen thousands of castings piling up outside the factory recently. Tesla has set up special racks to accommodate some of them, while others have been neatly lined up in rows at the northeast end of the factory complex.
