Tesla has officially started production of the regular version of its new Model Y in the United States. Until now only the premium Launch Series has been built and sold from Tesla’s Fremont factory and Giga Texas, and while the more expensive Launch Series is still currently the only option available to buyers in North America, that should be changing soon.
Tesla launched the new and updated version of the Model Y in late January in North America, a few weeks after it debuted in Asia and Europe. Initially the new Model Y was only available in the Long Range variant in a special Launch Series trim. That trim came fully loaded, with all premium options included, including the C$11,000/US$8,000 Full Self-Driving package.
Tesla has already started selling the regular version of its new Model Y in several markets, including China and Europe, and while the Launch Series is still only available in Canada and the U.S., it likely won’t be for much longer.
On Wednesday a Giga Texas drone flyover by Joe Tegtmeyer revealed the factory’s holding lot contained several units of the new Model Y without the distinctive Launch Series badging on the trunk lid, instead having the typical ‘Dual Motor’ badge in its place.
While Tesla has not officially updated its online configurator to the regular, non-Launch Series Model Y in North America, the start of production indicates it may be just around the corner.
There have been no recent drone flyovers at the Fremont factory to know if Tesla has also started production of the regular Model Y in California.
As a reminder, here’s the pricing for the legacy Model Y before it was discontinued and pulled from the online configurator. Pricing for the new Model Y, when it becomes available in the Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and LR trims, should be similar, and maybe even cheaper, if Tesla follows a similar pricing strategy from other markets. Tesla said the Performance variant won’t be arriving until later this year.
