EV charging stations at US federal buildings being shut down

The General Service Administration (GSA), which manages buildings owned by the federal government, plans to shut down all EV chargers at federal buildings.

Per an email to employees that The Verge obtained, the GSA noted:

As GSA has worked to align with the current administration, we have received direction that all GSA-owned charging stations are not mission critical…Neither Government Owned Vehicles nor Privately Owned Vehicles will be able to charge at these charging stations once they’re out of service.

Active EV chargers will be taken out of service once network contracts are canceled, and these chargers will be turned off at the breaker. In addition, the administration will be selling off EV chargers awaiting installation.

Through the Biden Administration‘s Inflation Reduction Act, the GSA received $975 million to upgrade and retrofit existing government buildings with emerging and sustainable technology. As part of this, the GSA ordered 58,000 EV chargers through March 2024 and started installing more than 25,000 EV charging ports at buildings across the country.

In addition to the EV charging dismantling, the GSA is also moving forward to offload the EVs it bought over the last several years. It remains unclear if the GSA will sell its EV fleet or put it into long-term storage.

So, if you are in the market for a commercial EV charger or a gently used EV, you might get a great deal through the government surplus auction site over the next few months.
