SoaceX’s Starbase could soon become a city after a Texas county granted the company’s request for an election. If successful, the step could significantly change the areas surrounding the space exploration company.
Musk’s desire to turn Starbase into a thriving hub could get another boost soon. SpaceX has obtained approval for an election to determine if the launch site and surrounding areas should be incorporated into a city. This was the next step after more than 70 locals signed a petition for the election late in 2024.
Residents in the affected territories will vote on May 3rd, but early voting will start on April 22nd. Most are SpaceX employees, with over 100 children. The area is currently unincorporated under Cameron County, close to the US-Mexico border.
If Starbase achieves city status, it could mean changes in taxation, infrastructure, and law enforcement. SpaceX will heavily dominate the potential city, with only 10 out of the 250 lots owned by other entities.
Musk’s ambitious plans for Starbase include transforming it into a base for spacecraft launches to support exploration and colonization of the Red Planet. SpaceX already has rocket manufacturing and testing facilities on the massive site, employing more than 3,400 workers.
