Construction work at Giga Berlin increases as new foundation footings appear

Just a few weeks ago we showed you the first pile driver arriving at the future site of Giga Berlin. We’ve also seen numerous construction roads built for all the heavy machinery and equipment to traverse the massive 300-hectare site.

Now it appears the pace of the construction work is picking up, as several new footings have appeared on the site.

The video below was taken on June 7, 2020 and posted to YouTube showing the scale of the new footings.

These appear to be very different than pile foundations, which are typically used when either there is a weak layer of soil at the surface, or when a building has a very heavy, concentrated load (think sky scraper) (via UnderstandConstruction).

From the video, these foundations are clearly not pile foundations, but appear to be more like those used in a footing and grade beam construction.

In addition, these types of footings would make sense as workers have clearly lowered the level of the ground where the footings are, to below the level of the surrounding land. Beams would run between each footing to support the load of the building at grade.

While we don’t know for sure, these could be test footings. However the volume of them leads us to believe these could be the first official signs of construction beginning at Giga Berlin.
