CATL’s new Chinese factory is already supplying Giga Shanghai

CATL’s new Shanghai factory has already sent produced battery cells to Tesla only a few months after CATL broke ground and began construction on the new site.

As per reporting by the Shanghai Observer, the CATL factory started providing Giga Shanghai with cells in November 2021.

The reporting noted that the CATL plant is still ramping up. However, the factory is already at 60 per cent of its design capacity.

This November timeframe speaks to Chinese efficiency in the building of these factories. On August 18, 2021, CATL and the Shanghai Municipal Government agreed to build a manufacturing base in Shanghai.

A few months later, the plant is already pumping our battery cells for Tesla located just down the road.

The new plant will be a cornerstone for CATL. As per the original plant announcement, the project includes a global innovation centre, an international functional headquarters, a future energy research institute and a high-end manufacturing base.

CATL, for its part, continues to dominate the Chinese battery industry. The company makes up 55 per cent of the countries market share, according to the Chinese Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance.
