On the one hand it was great news to see Tesla officially add the tow hitch as an official option for the new Model Y.
On the other hand, they also raised the price of the Model Y in Canada for both the Long Range (LR) and Performance variants of the electric SUV.
Until today, you could purchase the LR Model Y for $72,390, and the Performance Model Y for $84,390.
Now if you want the LR version, you’ll have to fork out an additional $3,600 as the new price is now listed at $75,990. If you want the Performance version, the increase is less than half the increase of the LR version at $1,600, now priced at $85,990.
The adjusted pricing is likely a result of the weakening Canadian dollar since the COVID-19 outbreak. Prices in the US Design Studio have remained the same.
If you have an existing reservation in Canada for a Model Y, your pricing at the time of ordering should still stand, and you will not have to pay the new prices.
An important consideration though is if you want to add the new tow hitch. Since the prices of the Model Y have now increased, your $1,000 tow hitch will trigger the new pricing to come into effect. That means on a LR version, the tow hitch will technically cost you $4,900, and on a Performance $2,900.
It remains to be seen if Tesla will honour the original pricing while still letting you add the tow hitch.
Let us know if you are successful in adding the tow hitch and keeping the original pricing on your Model Y reservation.
