Tesla Model Y L Introduces New “Immersive Sound X” Audio Feature

Tesla continues to refine the in-car experience for its vehicles, and the new Model Y L appears to be debuting a unique audio feature not currently available on any other model in the lineup.

The extended-wheelbase SUV, which features a six-seat configuration and upgraded interior hardware, includes a new audio processing mode called Immersive Sound X. The feature is part of the vehicle’s enhanced 18-speaker sound system and aims to deliver a more spatial listening experience inside the cabin.

Unlike the existing Immersive Sound setting found in other Tesla vehicles, Immersive Sound X introduces a new audio processing technique designed to create a more detailed and directional soundstage. According to Tesla’s on-screen description of the feature discovered in a showroom Model Y L in Australia, which just launched sales of the three-row electric SUV last week, the system works by analyzing and repositioning audio within the vehicle to simulate a larger listening environment.

“Uses sound eXtraction to place the listener in front of a detailed soundstage within an Immersive space. The size of the immersive space can be adjusted using the immersive slider to match individual preferences. When set to Auto, immersion automatically adapts based on the type of media being played.”

The technology appears to build on Tesla’s earlier immersive audio modes but adds an additional layer of spatial processing intended to make music, podcasts, and video content feel more three-dimensional. Rather than simply widening the stereo effect, the system attempts to recreate the sense of being positioned in front of a performance or recording environment.

Drivers and passengers can control how pronounced the effect is through an adjustable Immersive slider within the audio settings. This allows the perceived “size” of the listening environment to be expanded or reduced depending on personal preference. Those who prefer a more natural sound can keep the effect subtle, while others can increase the slider to create a more enveloping audio experience.

There is also an Auto mode that dynamically adjusts the spatial effect depending on what is being played. For example, spoken content such as podcasts or audiobooks may receive a lighter treatment, while music tracks or cinematic audio can be rendered with deeper spatial separation.

The hardware behind the system also plays an important role. The Model Y L’s 18-speaker setup represents an upgrade over the 15-speaker system found in the Premium Model Y AWD. The additional speakers, along with revised placement inside the cabin, allow the vehicle to more precisely distribute audio throughout the interior.

At least for now, Immersive Sound X appears to be exclusive to the Model Y L, and Tesla has not yet confirmed whether the feature will eventually roll out to other vehicles through software updates or hardware upgrades.

The Model Y L itself continues to expand beyond its initial market launch in China last year, recently arriving in Australia and New Zealand. It has also been approved for sale in South Korea. Supplied from Giga Shanghai, Canada’s recent move to eliminate tariffs on Chinese-made EVs could open the door to the six-seat electric SUV landing in Canada sooner rather than later.
