Tesla takes home three trophies in WhatCar? Car of the Year awards

The Tesla Model 3 and Model X, and the automaker’s innovative over-the-air (OTA) software updates have helped it take home multiple trophies at the annual WhatCar? Car of the Year awards.

What Car? is the UK’s biggest car buying guide and has been around for more than 45 years. Each year they publish their Car of the Year Awards in over 25 categories from Small Car to Performance Car. Last year the Performance Model 3 won the award for ‘Best Large Electric Vehicle’. Continuing the trend, the Standard Range Plus (SR+) Model 3 took the honours this year.

It might sound surprising that the base Model 3 won, but WhatCar? applauded Tesla for their efforts, saying “no large electric car balances range, performance, price and technology as well as the Tesla Model 3.

Taking the award for the ‘Best large electric car for big families’ was the Model X. Citing features such as the Falcon Wing doors allowing easy access in both the 5 and 7-seat configurations, WhatCar? said the electric SUV “is in a class of its own.”

In partnership with Thatcham Research, WhatCar? also handed Tesla the ‘Technology Award’ for its innovative OTA software updates. The automotive research firm said the updates not only add comfort features, it also makes the car safer, all done from the comfort of your home.
