Tesla releases significantly pared down Model 3 RWD in Mexico

Tesla has released a new, cheaper version of the Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) with significantly less premium interior features than the same variant available elsewhere in the world.

Probably the most notable change in the new Model 3 RWD is the introduction of textile seats. This textile option is only available in grey, with black and white vegan leather being limited to only the Long Range and Performance models in Mexico.

Along with the new textile seats, Tesla has also removed the heated and cooling seats from the Model 3 RWD, as well as the heated steering wheel. The removal of these features, while perhaps disappointing to some, is probably more aligned with the needs of a market like Mexico, where these premium features are less needed due to the warmer climate.

There were other changes to the interior as well. Tesla has also removed the secondary display for rear passengers and downgraded the vehicle’s ambient lighting to a basic white-only option.

Tesla’s cost-cutting measures continue, with the new Model 3 RWD in Mexico being equipped with acoustic glass only on the front windows, as opposed to having both the front and rear windows with acoustic glass in other markets.

The vehicle’s audio system has also been scaled back, with the number of speakers reduced from 17 to 9, and the removal of both subwoofers.

With all of these changes, Tesla also reduced the price of the car. This new Model 3 RWD in Mexico is priced at MXD 749,000 (C$55,050/US$40,200), which is MXD 50,000 (C$3,675/US$2,680) less than before. It will be interesting to see if this boost sales of the Model 3 RWD in Mexico. If it does, we might see these cost saving measures being introduced in other markets around the world.

These changes could also be a sign of what features Tesla may opt to include in the more budget friendly models that are supposed to be released next year.
