OTA recall issued for Tesla Model 3/Y tail light issue

A new recall notice has been posted on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for some Tesla Model 3 and Model Y cars over concerns the tail lights may not illuminate.

As with the majority of Tesla recall notices, the fix will be a simple over-the-air (OTA) software update.

According to the notice, some 321,628 2023 Model 3 cars and 2020-2023 Model Y SUVs are covered under the recall, but approximately only 1% will suffer from the issue.

That issue is that in rare instances one or both sides of the tail lights might “intermittently illuminate” due to a software bug that causes “fault detections during the wake up process.”

The issue does not affect the brake lights, reverse lights, or turn signals, according to Tesla, who also says that they are not aware of any crashes or injuries as a result of the issue.

Transport Canada has not issued a similar recall notice at the time of publication.
