In a regional first, SpaceX gateway terminals have arrived in Ungava Bay in northern Quebec.
The purchase was celebrated by the Kativik Regional Government and arrived via an Air Inuit cargo plane in mid-December.
Tamaani Internet has confirmed that the gateways will come online in early 2025 and provide six communities with high-speed, reliable internet services. The terminals will be part of Tamaani’s Fibre-to-the-Home network, which already includes over 1,800 residential subscribers and 150 local businesses and organizations throughout Nunavik. Tamanni Internet is one of the only internet providers in the region and serves 14 Nunavik communities.
The SpaceX gateway terminals will be located in Aupaluk, Kangiqsualujjuaq, Kangiqsujuaq, Kangirsuk, Quaqtaq, and Tasiujaq.
The SpaceX gateway terminals are designed to be a stop-gap measure as the Eastern Arctic Underwater Fibre Optic Network (EAUFON) is brought online in the region. The three-phase EAUFON project will see communities throughout the Hudson Strait and Hudson Coast receive fibre internet access for the first time. The six communities receiving the gateway terminals are the project’s last phase, with an anticipated start date of July 2025.
Tamaani Internet did not confirm an exact date for when the SpaceX terminals will go online, nor have they updated their pricing or plans to reflect the new gateways.
