Tesla Cybertruck buyers in British Columbia can now get their electric pickup truck for C$10,000 less through a provincial rebate program. Tesla is also working on getting the Cybertruck eligible for a C$10,000 federal incentive, however both of these incentives are only available to business owners.
Tesla launched the Cybertruck in Canada last month, but its high price, starting at C$137,990, meant it was not eligible for the typical federal (iZEV) or provincial rebates we are used to with the Model 3 and Model Y. However, despite the high price, Tesla has updated their website to show the Cybertruck is eligible for a C$10,000 incentive for BC business owners.
According to an update to the Electric Vehicle Incentives page on Tesla’s website this week, a provincial incentive worth up to C$10,000 is now available in BC. While it doesn’t specify, the description clearly shows it is for the Cybertruck.
“Up to $10,000 incentive on eligible commercial pick-up trucks with a bed length of at least 72 inches,” the website says.
Along with the description, Tesla also includes a link to learn more, directing readers to the Clean BC Go Electric rebate program website. According to the terms of the program, you need to either lease the Cybertruck for 36 months or buy it and keep it registered in BC during this time period. If you buy the vehicle and move it out of province, you’ll have to pay back the $10,000 incentive.
There are additional requirements in order to be eligible for the rebate, like having a WorkSafeBC number and recent utility bills, as well as a valid BC business license. This information must be submitted at the time of application, because unlike the iZEV and C$4,000 provincial rebates, this one is not applied by Tesla at the time of purchase.
Potential Federal Rebate on the Horizon
While this incentive is strictly for buyers in BC, the Cybertruck could soon also be eligible for up to C$10,000 in federal incentive for buyers across Canada. This rebate is covered under the Incentives for Medium and Heavy-duty Zero-Emission Vehicles (iMHZEV) Program. Under the terms of this program, the Cybertruck qualifies because it has a pick-up truck box or bed of at least 183 cm (72 in. or 6ft) in interior length.
The requirements also state that the truck must have a vehicle gross weight rating (GVWR) over 8,500lbs. The Cybertruck weighs in at 8,834 lb.
Currently, both the Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevrolet Silverado EV qualify for this iMHZEV rebate, but only for $5,000.
We have been told Tesla is working with Transport Canada to have the Cybertruck added to the list of eligible vehicles, but there is no timeline for when it will be added. We’ll be sure to let you know as soon as that happens.
