The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a new recall for the Model S and Model X over concerns the doors being unlocked during a crash. However as with the majority of Tesla’s recalls, this one is corrected with a simple over-the-air (OTA) software update.
No similar recall has yet been posted by Transport Canada.
According to the NHTSA recall document, which you can read in full below, the issue was first discovered on December 6, 2023 by Tesla engineers conducting routine validation side-impact testing. During one of the tests it was observed that a cabin door unlatched after impact, on the side of the vehicle that wasn’t hit. After a quick investigation it was discovered that the vehicle did not have the required lockout functionality, which was subsequently found to have been left out of the 2021.36 and later software releases.
Despite the issue having been present for over two years, Tesla says they are not aware of any warranty claims or injuries related to it.
The issue covers 120,423 2021-2023 Model S and Model X vehicles, but it can be fixed by installing 2022.44.30, aka the holiday update, or later.
