Tesla’s Giga Shanghai has gone from strength to strength since it opened in 2019. Last month, the Chinese production facility rolled out 80,345 cars from its manufacturing lines, slightly less than the 80,365 it managed in the previous month, continuing a four month trend of producing around 80,000 cars or more.
Breaking down by models, Giga Shanghai manufactured 57,604 Model Ys, its second highest ever, surpassed only by March 2023 when the factory produced 60,127 units of the electric SUV. The balance was made up of the Model 3 or 22,741, 11% below the year-to-date average. The figures were obtained from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), whose member automakers report their sales data. (via TeslaPodcast)
Tesla China retailed a total of 31,423 EVs, comprising 23,632 Model Ys and 7,791 Model 3s. However, the EV maker had 64,285 retail sales, with the more expensive model being the majority. This left Tesla holding an inventory of 16,060 units, comprising 13,643 Model Ys and 2,417 Model 3s for the month of July.
Drive Tesla earlier reported Tesla’s China sales in July declined 31% compared to June. However, this new data from the CPCA puts more perspective on Tesla’s situation. Giga Shanghai is rumoured to have commenced Project Highland Model 3 production, which might help shore up the EV’s sales numbers in the coming months.
