The Tesla Model Y has claimed the title of the most American-made car for the second consecutive year, according to the latest ranking released by Cars.com. Tesla dominated the list by securing the top four positions, with the Model Y, Model 3, Model X, and Model S ranked at No. 1 through No. 4, respectively.
The American-Made Index determines a car’s eligibility based on several factors, including the location of the final assembly, the percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts, the country of origin for available engines and transmissions, and the number of U.S. manufacturing employees relative to the automaker’s footprint.
After looking at a total of 388 cars, 100 made the cut for the annual index with models from 11 different automakers and 23 different brands. Leading the way was Tesla securing all top 4 spots. Despite Ford calling itself “the most American” automaker earlier this year, it did not make the top 10 with the remaining vehicles all coming from non-American based automakers Honda, Acura, and Volkswagen.
As we know all Tesla models are produced in Fremont, California, while the Model Y is also manufactured in Austin, Texas. According to Cars.com, Tesla boasts 100% domestic production for all cars sold in the United States, far surpassing the industry average of 52%.
While the Tesla models, and the VW ID.4 were the only electric vehicles (EVs) to make the top 10, there was only one other EV to make it into the top 100. That was the Ford F-150 Lightning, which came in at #38. You might think Rivian would have been included since they manufacture their R1T and R1S in Normal, Illinois, but their EVs have gross vehicle weight ratings that surpass the maximum requirement of 8,500lbs, as mandated by the American Automobile Labeling Act for reporting purposes. The same is true for the GMC Hummer EV, and likely the Silverado EV, Ram 1500 REV when they come out, and when the Cybertruck starts deliveries later this year, it likely won’t make the list either.
