Tesla’s Model Y has been named the best-selling car in Europe in the first quarter of 2023, AM Online reports. The electric crossover beat popular models, including Dacia’s Sandero, the Volkswagen T-Roc, Peugeot 208, and Vauxhall Corsa.
The Model Y moved 71,683 units in the first three months of the year, representing a 173% jump year-on-year. The much more affordable Dacia trailed it in second position by more than 1,100 units.
The European auto market saw new registrations of 1.4 million units in March, rising 26%. Total registration for the quarter was 3.22 million. More than half of the vehicles registered were zero-emission.
Tesla accounted for 228% of all fully electric vehicle registrations in March and 22% in the quarter. The BEV market saw a 43% rise in March, selling more than 219,000 units.
The Model Y became more attractive after price cuts introduced by Tesla, helping the company to deliver 422,000 vehicles in the quarter. This popularity, however, comes at the expense of the less expensive Model 3, which saw a drop of 42% in registrations in March and 40% in the quarter.
Analysts have predicted that Model Y will be among Europe’s best-selling products at the year’s end.
Volkswagen, however, sold the most vehicles for a brand on the continent, with 332,723 units. Toyota placed second, with 220,019 units sold.
The Model Y was the best-selling EV in Germany in March and the best-selling SUV in China in the same month.
