Tesla issues physical and OTA recalls in China for seatbelt and software issues

Tesla has issued two new recalls in China impacting more than 80,000 Model 3, Model S, and Model X cars. The majority of the cars will have the issues corrected through a free over-the-air (OTA) software update, however some will require a physical inspection and possible repair.

The larger of the two recalls involves 67,698 imported Model S and Model X cars produced at the Fremont factory between September 25, 2013 and November 21, 2020.

According to the notice posted by China’s State Administration for Market Regulation on Friday, a software issue in these vehicles causes a battery management system miscalculation resulting in warnings on the in-car display.

Tesla will issue an OTA software update to correct the issue.

An additional 12,863 Model 3 cars were also recalled on Friday. Of those, 2,736 were imported with production dates between January 12, 2019 and November 22, 20219, while the remaining 10,127 units were manufactured at Giga Shanghai between October 14, 2019 and September 26, 2022.

This recall involves concerns the rear seat belt anchor bolt may not have been properly reinstalled after being serviced for a previous issue.

Owners of impacted vehicles will be required to visit a Service Center to have the seat belt anchors inspected and repaired if neceessary.
