Tesla plans to submit paperwork to obtain the required permits for the first phase of construction to expand Giga Berlin by the end of 2022.
The multi-phased expansion project will see the factory’s output increase from the current 250,000 vehicles per capacity to more than 1.5 million when it is complete.
These expansion plans have been in the works for some time. Last month we reported the company was planning to expand the facility by 70 hectares (173 acres). In preparation for this expansion, the company began clearing trees at the northern end of the factory complex.
However, construction cannot officially start until Tesla gets the go-ahead from local authorities.
Oder-Spree district documents revealed that Tesla plans to submit the paperwork in the next two months.

The company has also announced that at the end of 2022, it will submit an application to expand the plant at the end of 2022, combined with a further increase in capacity from five hundred thousand to over one million passenger cars per year.
This will be the first set of permits of Tesla’s multi-phased project to expand Giga Berlin. As we exclusively reported earlier this month this first and second phase will mainly deal with changes to existing facilities, and the construction of some temporary facilities.
It won’t be until phase 3 until we see the start of construction of new vehicle production buildings in the area that is currently being cleared.
These new Oder-Spree documents only say “over one million” cars per year will be produced each with after the expansion, but based on documents seen by Drive Tesla that number will be over 1.5 million.
As per other documents shared by Twitter user @gigafactory_4, the cost of permit fees for this first phase will be under 10 million euros.

In addition to the physical expansion, Tesla is also planning to assist with public transportation to the new factory. This includes building a bicycle path to the factory.
If history repeats itself the expansion will likely face significant local opposition, but the expansion of Giga Berlin will happen.
