Tesla wins part of $40 million fund to build 32 new Superchargers in Australia

The Tesla Supercharger network in Australia is about to get a major boost thanks to funding from the New South Wales Government. Tesla was one of seven companies to be awarded part of a AUD$39.4 million fund to help expand the country’s network of DC fast chargers.

This is the first rounding of funding to be announced, which will see a total of 86 new DC fast charging stations with 500 connectors to be installed across the region from Ampol, BP, Evie Networks, NRMA. Zeus Renewables, and of course Tesla.

Tesla themselves will be building 32 new Superchargers with their portion of the funding. The proposed Supercharger stations range in size from 4 stalls up to 15 stalls, the largest number of connectors at any station that will be part of this program.

According to Treasurer and Minister for Energy Matt Kean, all of the stations will be powered by renewable energy.

“The ultra-fast chargers will be able to charge modern EVs from 20 per cent to 80 per cent in around 15 minutes and all stations will be fully powered with renewable energy,” Kean said in a statement.

The stations will be built over the next two years in both highway and inner-city sites. The government has previously announced a plan to add as many as 250 charging stations across New South Wales, with the goal of having chargers no more than 5km apart in city areas and no more than 100km apart on major roads and highways.

This round of funding is the first of an expected three rounds of funding. The successful applicants for the second round of funding are set to be announced before the end of the year.

Tesla’s Supercharger network currently has 48 stations across Australia, with the majority located in and around New South Wales.
