The City of Burnaby has completed construction of a 100-charger EV parking lot to help accelerate the city’s transition to a zero-carbon municipal fleet.
The city retrofitted the City Hall west parking lot with 100 EV chargers, making it one of the largest EV charger parking lots in Canada.
Along with the EV chargers, the parking lot includes an installation of a large-scale solar panel canopy.
As per the announcement, the city received $500,000 through Natural Resources Canada Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program. In addition, the city contributed $650,000 to bring the total project cost to $1.1 million.
The new parking lot will not be for public use.
However, the city continues to add public use chargers at community centres, recreation facilities, libraries and parks.
Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley had this to say at the announcement:
This is an exciting project for the City of Burnaby as we strive to activate our community to more rapid action on climate change. We are grateful for the federal government’s significant contribution to this project, as it will not only act as a catalyst for our fleet electrification but also as a source of inspiration for our community to act fast to achieve carbon neutrality.
Burnaby now has 128 EV chargers for City of Burnaby vehicles in two location. However, the city plans to install an additional 200 EV chargers over the next three years, primarily for their fleet.
