The Boring Company’s Las Olas Loop in Fort Lauderdale gets one step closer to reality

The Boring Company’s plans for a pair of underground tunnels in Fort Lauderdale, Florida has taken another step forward.

At a meeting on Tuesday the Fort Lauderdale City Commission signed an interim agreement and contributed $375,000 towards feasibility studies to be conducted on the Las Olas Loop project.

The money will go towards looking at alternative options for the project, a geotechnical report, and initial design drawings for the tunnels and associated stations, reports NBC Miami.

TBC initially approached Fort Lauderdale about the Las Olas Loop project last year with an unsolicited bid to connect the downtown area with the beach.

As a result they had to wait 45 days to allow other companies to submit competing bids for a similar system, but the city received no responses giving TBC the exclusive opportunity to work with Fort Lauderdale on the tunnels.

The project would see a pair of 2.5 mile (4.2km) tunnels built underneath the city. That is more than twice the length of the Las Vegas Loop underneath the Las Vegas Convention Centre grounds which measure 1.28 km (0.8 mile).

But it is tiny in comparison to another project in the works. As we reported earlier this week the company is working behind the scenes to build an 80-mile tunnel connecting Austin and San Antonio.
