J.D. Power finds EV consideration is on the rise

The J.D. Power 2022 US Electric Consideration survey was published today, and now more than ever people are more likely to consider buying an electric vehicle (EV).

The big highlight of the survey is that the addition of new EV models moved the needle on consumer consideration. However, there are still sceptics out there.

Stewart Stropp from J.D. Power had this to say:

In fact, several new models from perennial mass market brands are at the top of that consideration list. Even so, more remains to be done in terms of transitioning from early to mass adoption. Though the study findings show a shift in favor of EVs, about 76% of new-vehicle shoppers say they are not ‘very likely’ to consider buying one. With new EV model introductions coming at a rapid pace, automakers must continue their efforts to persuade more shoppers to give these vehicles a try.

Here are some of the other highlights:

  • EV consideration is strongest for premium buyers. 37 per cent of premium vehicle owners are very likely to consider an EV, while only 21 per cent of mass-market owners are very likely.
  • Mass-market vehicle owners’ response to very likely to consider an EV is up to six percentage points from last year.
  • 30 per cent of those who reject EVs cite a lack of information as a reason for their lack of consideration.

Finally, even though Tesla has held a dominant lead the EV marketplace for so long, legacy automakers are moving the needle regarding new-vehicle shoppers’ interest.

Stropp had this to say:

Tesla remains a dominant player, but new-vehicle shoppers are proving quite willing to consider EVs from legacy brands

This J.D. Power study had responses from 10,030 consumers that the company surveyed between February and April 2022.
