The Government of Canada announced this morning a large investment to bring more electric vehicle (EV) chargers to the province of Ontario.
Funded through Natural Resources Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP), $2 million will be provided to Essex Powerlines Corporation for the installation and deployment of 300 EV chargers across the province.
According to a press release, there will be additional funding from unnamed sources bringing the total project cost to $4 million.
“This investment empowers Windsor-Essex residents and businesses to lead the transition to electric vehicles, helping our community take a giant step toward a future that is clean, green and prosperous,” said Irek Kusmierczyk, Member of Parliament for Windsor–Tecumseh.
The locations for these chargers have not yet been identified. Essex Powerlines will launch a project, called Charge Up, for interested parties to apply to have them installed in public places, on-street, multi-unit residential buildings, at workplaces or for light-duty vehicle fleets.
All 300 EV chargers are scheduled to be available by September 2023.
The press release did not specify if these will be Level 2 or DC fast chargers. The federal government recently announced a $1.2 million investment for up to 250 Level 2 chargers in Nova Scotia, so these could be DC fast chargers considering the project cost is more than double that amount.
