Clinton Township in Ohio is excited to be “riding the wave of the future” after purchasing three Teslas for police and township use.
Two Tesla Model Ys were purchased by Police Chief Mike Jones, who was looking for ways to save money on fuel and maintenance on his fleet of police cruisers.
After doing some research he reached out to the Bargersville Police Chief Todd Bertram, who has seen big savings with his Model 3 cruiser.
Based on Jones’ analysis, the Model Y is about $14,000 more expensive than a Ford Explorer, but that extra upfront cost will be made up in just three years.
The township expects to spend just $875 on electricity compared to $4,000 in fuel.
Maintenance costs are also expected to be significantly lower, at just $40 per year compared to $900 for the Explorer.
The two Model Ys were upfitted with police equipment by Parr Public Safety Equipment. The company shared photos of one of the cruisers on their Facebook page last week, as well as a video on TikTok that was later posted to Twitter.
In addition to the police cruisers, the township also purchased a Model 3 for their code compliance officer.
Township trustee Jane Cera said the investment in the three Teslas is worth it for the residents of the township, and the planet.
“I am delighted about this decision to begin electrifying our fleet. We will be saving our residents significant costs with these e-vehicles, doing what’s necessary for our climate, and continuing to demonstrate our commitment to sustainability,” Cera said.
