Hyundai to launch 3-month try before you buy program for Ioniq 5: Report

The upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV will reportedly be the first electric vehicle (EV) to have a try before you buy program. The program design would allow users to try out the vehicle and fall in love with the Ioniq enough to buy it.

This would be the first of this initiative in the EV space, and Hyundai will reportedly offer this throughout North America.

According to a report by Automotive News, the program is similar to a short-term lease, but the details are not publicly available. The idea is that eligible drivers who are not sure about the range and charging limitations of an EV can test the car and see if it is a good fit. The driver will have up to three months to test it out.

Hyundai would collect payments for the use of the car, insurance and any maintenance costs. After three months the driver can elect to purchase or lease the car.

The report did not include price, eligibility or when it will go live. If it does eventually come to fruition it would be interesting way to convert those who are curious about EVs into EV drivers.

The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV is expected to arrive on Canadian roads later this fall. The automaker launched pre-orders in Canada yesterday, but the pricing of the vehicle is not available at this time.
