Quebec and New Brunswick will soon have 100 new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations installed throughout the two provinces in a partnership with the Government of Canada, Earth Day Canada, and IGA.
The Government of Canada announced the $5 million investment this morning made possible through Natural Resources Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program. The large investment will allow the Montreal-based association of Earth Day Canada to build EV fast chargers at 50 IGA grocery stores throughout the two provinces.
“IGA merchants have been committed to the environment for many years. Twelve years ago we established the Fonds Éco IGA, and we’ve provided more than $12 million for environmental projects in all the regions of the province of Quebec. Contributing to the installation of charging stations in our supermarket parking lots is another way to do our share while simplifying our customers’ lives,” said Luc Daigle President of IGA extra Daigle food markets.
Initial plans call for all new charging stations to open before the end of 2021. Along with the EV charging stations, part of the investment will also go towards establishing hydrogen stations in metropolitan centres.
The announcement of this deal involving IGA follows an exclusive story we reported on earlier this month. Based on information received by Drive Tesla, Sobeys (IGA) has partnered with the automaker to bring more Supercharger stations to Quebec, and possibly other provinces.
