Tesla in Canada has officially changed its Carrier Direct policy and will no longer perform home deliveries if you live in a province without a sales and delivery center.
Previously the automaker used to set up a third-party carrier to deliver your new car if you lived more than a certain distance away from an official Tesla location. This is what Tesla’s “Carrier Direct” policy says about home deliveries, which still appears on the Tesla website.
“Carrier Direct
This option is available for customers who live more than 360km from a Tesla location and are eligible for a carrier to bring their vehicle to their delivery address. Please note that this delivery option is only available for new titled vehicles. Used vehicles are not eligible for a carrier-direct delivery.”
Update October 18, 11:28am – Tesla has now removed this section from its website.
The change, which impacts many Canadians, took effect recently and has now been confirmed by the company in an email to Drive Tesla reader Sam Poirier.
As the writer of the email says, new Tesla owners will have to travel to their nearest service center to pick up their vehicle. For Poirier, who lives in Moncton, New Brunswick, that means a drive of more than 7 hours to the Quebec Service Center.
Not only that, but with the current COVID-19 pandemic, residents of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and New Foundland must isolate for 14 days if they leave the Atlantic provinces.
If the drive to the nearest Tesla location is too much, the email does say you can set up home delivery, but at your own cost.
Along with the change to home deliveries, the email also confirms Tesla no longer offers out of province financing.
We had heard Tesla had stopped home deliveries in eastern Canada over the last few weeks, but this is the first time we’ve heard officially from the automaker about the change.
Having the option to get your new Tesla delivered to your home was a big positive for many Canadians in areas not served by Tesla. Hopefully this doesn’t deter potential owners faced with a long drive to no longer order one.
