Tesla has officially launched the six-seat Model Y L in India, expanding its lineup with a larger, three-row version of its best-selling electric SUV just months after entering the market.
According to Tesla’s online configurator in India, the new variant debuted on Wednesday with a starting price of ₹61,99,000 (C$90,300/US$66,100), with customer deliveries expected to begin in Summer 2026.
In a surprising twist, the new Model Y L undercuts at least one of Tesla’s existing variants in India. Despite being larger and more premium, it is almost 10% less expensive than the smaller Model Y Premium Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD), an unusual pricing strategy that could help Tesla attract more buyers in a cost-sensitive market.
The launch marks Tesla’s first new product introduction in India since it began selling the Model Y in mid-2025. That initial rollout was met with limited success, with just 225 vehicles sold throughout the second half of the year. High import duties, reaching up to 100%, have significantly inflated prices, placing Tesla vehicles in the luxury segment in a country where most cars sell for around US$20,000.
The Model Y lineup in India now spans a range of price points, with the RWD version starting at around ₹60 lakh and the Long Range RWD variant climbing to approximately ₹68 lakh. The Model Y L is positioned within that range, offering additional practicality without a corresponding jump in price.
While the Model Y L has now launched in India, it remains unavailable in North America. The variant first appeared in China last year, before expanding to Australia and New Zealand and then most of Asia.
North American buyers will have to wait a little longer as Elon Musk previously said the Model Y L could launch here towards the end of 2026.
