Tesla has officially cleared a major regulatory hurdle in Europe, announcing that Full Self-Driving (Supervised) has been approved in the Netherlands.
The milestone, announced by Tesla’s Europe, Middle East and Africa account on X, marks the first time the company’s advanced driver assistance system has received national approval in the region, opening the door for expansion across the continent.
“The future of mobility has arrived,” Tesla said in its announcement. The company added that with the approval, FSD will begin rolling out to customers “shortly,” but did not go as far as to provide an exact timeline.

The Dutch vehicle authority RDW also published their own press release, saying that after “extensive research and testing,” FSD is approved and safe to use on local roads, but that drivers must still pay attention and be ready to take over at any time.
“The proper use of this driver’s system makes a positive contribution to road safety. A vehicle with FSD Supervised is not self-driving. It is a driver’s aid system and the driver remains responsible and must always maintain control.”
A long road to approval
Today’s approval follows more than a year of intensive testing, validation, and regulatory engagement. Tesla previously revealed it had completed over 1.6 million kilometres of FSD testing on European roads, along with thousands of controlled test scenarios and extensive documentation covering hundreds of compliance requirements.
The company also conducted more than 13,000 customer ride-alongs, giving regulators real-world insight into how the system performs outside of controlled environments.
Tesla had previously indicated it hoped to receive approval in Februray, but that timeline came and went without signs of progress. The company’s most recent update said they finally hoped to receive approval on April 10, and while it came down to the final hours of the day, the company has now secured regulatory clearance.
First approval unlocks broader European rollout
The Netherlands approval is particularly significant because of how vehicle regulations work within Europe. With clearance now granted by Dutch regulators, other countries can recognize the approval at a national level, potentially accelerating Tesla’s long-awaited FSD rollout across multiple markets.
RDW acknowledged this in their press release as well, saying, “Due to the type approval, the driver’s assistance system can now be used in the Netherlands, with possible later expansion for all member states of the European Union.”
In its announcement, Tesla already indicated that additional European countries could follow in the coming months.
What happens next
With approval now secured in the Netherlands, Tesla says it will begin rolling out FSD (Supervised) to customers in the country in the near future, but as we noted an exact timeline has not yet been shared.
If additional countries quickly follow suit, this could mark the beginning of Tesla’s most significant expansion of FSD outside North America to date, something which European customers have long been waiting for.
