Google Maps Adds AI-Powered EV Trip Planning and Battery Predictions

Google is bringing a major upgrade to electric vehicle (EV) navigation, announcing that Google Maps will soon offer AI-powered trip planning and battery predictions across more than 350 EV models compatible with Android Auto.

The update, which is now rolling out in the United States, aims to simplify long-distance travel for EV owners by integrating charging recommendations directly into the navigation experience—something that has long been a core advantage of Tesla vehicles.

With the new feature, drivers can enter their destination and vehicle details into Google Maps, including their current state of charge. The system will then calculate expected energy usage, suggest optimal charging stops, and display the estimated battery percentage upon arrival. It will also adjust the estimated arrival time (ETA) to account for charging sessions along the route.

Google says the system relies on a combination of artificial intelligence and detailed energy modeling to deliver accurate predictions.

“To deliver accurate battery predictions for hundreds of vehicles, we combine AI with advanced energy models that analyze car details — like weight and battery size — alongside Maps’ real-time information about traffic, road elevation and weather,” the company explained. “This will allow us to bring intelligent trip-planning features to most U.S. EVs soon.”

While Tesla drivers have had access to similar functionality for years through the company’s in-house navigation system, the new Google Maps update brings comparable capabilities to a much broader segment of the EV market. For owners of non-Tesla vehicles, this could significantly reduce the need to rely on multiple third-party apps to plan trips and locate charging stations.

The rollout currently includes vehicles from more than 15 brands, though Google has not published a full list of supported models. However, the company confirmed that additional vehicles will be added over time as compatibility expands.
