The RCMP is continuing to expand its electric vehicle (EV) fleet, with Burnaby becoming the latest detachment to test an electric patrol vehicle as part of a broader federal pilot program aimed at determining whether EVs can meet the demands of frontline policing.
The latest EV to join the fleet is a 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, which arrived in February and is now being deployed by Traffic Services officers during regular duties across the city fully outfitted for police work, complete with standard markings and equipment.
During the trial, officers will provide feedback on performance, range, and practicality in day-to-day operations, helping inform the RCMP’s long-term electrification strategy.

“We’re pleased to support this federal pilot project to help determine the suitability of electric vehicles in police operations, as part of a larger national commitment to move towards more zero-emissions vehicles in the RCMP fleet,” said Burnaby RCMP Officer in Charge Chief Superintendent Bill Parmar. “This is an exciting opportunity for our detachment to contribute to the force’s shift towards greener technologies, by providing real-world testing to ensure the best fit for officers on patrol.”
The Burnaby pilot builds on earlier successes across Canada, particularly in British Columbia. The West Shore RCMP has already been testing multiple EVs, including a Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and F-150 Lightning. Among those, the Model Y has stood out as a favourite, with officers praising its performance, instant torque, and ease of charging.
In fact, early concerns about battery limitations in policing scenarios have largely been unfounded. Officers reported that range was more than sufficient for daily use, with charging seamlessly integrated into shift routines.
While challenges remain—particularly around charging infrastructure for rural detachments which cover vast areas of the country—urban detachments like Burnaby are proving to be ideal testing grounds.
The Burnaby RCMP isn’t the first police force in Canada to add a Chevy Blazer EV. Last year Peel Regional Police in Ontario also introduced a 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, their first fully electric patrol vehicle.
