Lucid Air Pure RWD Recalled Over Half-Shaft Defect That Can Cause Power Loss

Lucid is recalling 225 Air Pure Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) sedans in the United States due to a potentially serious powertrain defect that could cause the vehicle to lose drive power without warning. The issue stems from improperly secured half-shaft bolts that may allow the driveshaft to disconnect from the electric drive unit.

The recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affects model years 2024 through 2026 that were built between September 23, 2023, and July 23, 2025. According to Lucid, the problem originates from an interruption in torque operations during the adhesive curing process for the bolts.

In some cases, this could leave the half-shaft insufficiently fastened, increasing the risk of disengagement and a sudden loss of motive power.

Lucid said the recall applies only to the Air Pure RWD variant because it uses a single-motor setup. Other Air trims—Touring and Grand Touring—feature dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations, which would not suffer a total loss of power if one shaft failed.

Lucid will contact owners by December 5, 2025, with instructions to schedule a free repair. Technicians will remove and inspect the half-shaft bolts, then replace them with new parts that meet updated quality standards.

The automaker first began investigating half-shaft detachment reports in 2024 after a small number of incidents were identified in the field. At that time, the automaker believed the problem was isolated and limited to vehicles operating at low speeds. However, a July 2025 review by Lucid’s Product Safety Working Group revealed the issue was more widespread than initially thought.

Engineers developed a “lash detection algorithm” to identify cars exhibiting early signs of the defect. This system allowed Lucid to pinpoint at-risk vehicles produced before a July 25, 2025 “clean point,” when new manufacturing safeguards were introduced. Approximately 90% of the affected cars identified through the algorithm are expected to develop the defect if not repaired.

This marks the second recall involving the Lucid Air Pure RWD over potential drive power loss within a year. In late 2024, Lucid recalled more than 1,500 Air Pure sedans in Canada and the United States for an issue stemming from a shortened rear subframe wiring harness that was produced with insufficient length due to a documentation error. The defect placed stress on the harness connector, which in some cases led to a complete disconnection and an unexpected loss of drive power.
