Tesla has introduced a new Wheel and Tire Protection Plan (WTPP) in the United States, expanding its coverage options for drivers concerned about unexpected damage from road hazards. Unlike Tesla’s earlier annual plans, the new program is structured as a monthly subscription, offering flexibility while providing unlimited repairs and low-cost replacements.
The subscription cost varies depending on the vehicle, ranging from as little as $12 per month for the Model 3 (non-Performance), up to $25 per month for the Model S and Model X Plaid vehicles.
- Model 3 (non-Performance): $12/month
- Model 3 Performance: $16/month
- Model Y (non-Performance): $16/month
- Model Y Performance: $20/month
- Model S (non-Performance): $20/month
- Model S Plaid: $25/month
- Model X (non-Performance): $20/month
- Model X Plaid: $25/month
- Cybertruck: $20/month
What’s Covered
Tesla’s WTPP is designed to protect owners from unforeseen incidents caused by road hazards such as potholes, nails, or road debris. Key features include:
- Unlimited Tire Repairs: Covers punctures and other common damage.
- Wheel or Tire Replacement: Available with a $25 deductible per occurrence.
- Immediate Coverage: Protection begins the same day of subscription and lasts up to 24 months unless cancelled.
The plan is available through the Tesla mobile app under the Upgrades > Service Plan section, making enrollment seamless for new owners.
What’s Not Covered
As with most protection packages, Tesla’s plan has important exclusions. Coverage does not apply to:
- Cosmetic damage such as curb rash
- Theft or vandalism
- Pre-existing damage before subscribing
- Tires with tread depth below 4/32″
Owners must also subscribe within 30 days of purchasing a new Tesla, buying a new set of four tires, or completing a complimentary inspection.
A Shift From Annual Plans
Back in 2023, Tesla offered a simpler annual tire protection plan for the Model Y at $55 per year. While affordable, it had limited coverage, and was only available in California. The shift to a nationwide subscription-based model increases costs but provides broader protection and unlimited repair claims.
Should You Subscribe?
With larger wheels and performance-oriented low-profile tires becoming more common on Teslas, repair and replacement costs have risen sharply. Tesla’s new subscription helps offset these expenses, giving peace of mind to drivers who frequently encounter rough roads or urban hazards.
While the WTPP doesn’t cover every scenario, it provides a valuable safety net against some of the most common and costly tire-related incidents. For many Tesla owners, especially those with premium trims or larger wheels, the plan could prove to be a cost-saving investment.
You can learn more about the plan on Tesla’s website.
