Tesla Supercharger in Vaughan opens nearly 2 years after construction first began [Ontario]

Tesla drivers in the Greater Toronto Area now have a Supercharger, as the long-awaited station in Vaughan, Ontario is finally open. The 16-stall station, located at 3940 Highway 7 in front of Fortinos grocery store, went live this week.

Construction on the Vaughan Supercharger originally began in September 2023, nearly a year after it was first expected to be completed. Tesla had initially targeted a late 2022 opening, but the project was delayed due to municipal concerns over potential interference with a right-of-way.

Those concerns were resolved in mid-2023, clearing the way for crews to begin groundwork on the site, with a revised Q1 2024 opening. However, that timeline came and went, but the site is finally operational and open to drivers.

The new station is located just 12 minutes from the existing Concord Supercharger, which features 20 V2 (150kW) stalls, the Vaughan location helps relieve pressure on busier stations and adds faster 250kW max charging speeds and a convenient location near Highways 400 and 407.

The Vaughan Supercharger offers off-peak and peak pricing throughout the day, ranging from a low of $0.29/kWh up to $0.60/kWh.

The Vaughan Supercharger is the second station to open in Ontario in the last month, after many months, and years, of no progress at all. In May Tesla opened the Brampton Supercharger, more than a year after construction first began. There are still many other stations in southwestern Ontario that are complete and waiting for activation, with Hydro One appearing to be the one behind the substantial delays.

With two openings in a month, hopefully this is a sign of more to come. The next could be another Supercharger in Vaughan just a few kilometers away, as a 20 stall Supercharger located on Famous Avenue has been waiting since mid-2024 to be activated.
