Tesla Sales Drop Leads to First U.S. EV Market Decline in Over a Year

The U.S. electric vehicle (EV) market experienced a rare setback in April, posting its first year-over-year (YoY) decline in 14 months.

According to newly released data from S&P Global Mobility, total EV registrations fell 4.4% compared to April 2024, with roughly 97,800 battery-electric vehicles sold. The primary driver behind the drop was a 16% YoY decline in Tesla’s U.S. sales, which dipped below 40,000 units for the month. (via Automotive News)

With Tesla maintaining a commanding 44% share of the American EV market, even modest fluctuations in the automaker’s sales can have a significant affect on overall industry trends. No other EV brand in the U.S. comes close in terms of market presence—Chevrolet and Ford, the next closest competitors, each hold less than 10% share.

Tesla’s April results continue a downward trajectory that began earlier this year. Global deliveries were already down 13% in Q1 2025, and the company faces increasing pressure to rebound in June to meet its full-year guidance. CEO Elon Musk has said the company has no issues with demand, with the lone exception being Europe, despite sales dips now appearing in nearly all major regions.

However, strong sales have appeared in several Asia-Pacific markets after the introduction of the new Model Y.

Adding to Tesla’s challenges, competition is intensifying. Chevrolet, in particular, posted a strong April thanks to the new Equinox EV, which has garnered attention for delivering superior real-world range at an affordable price point. This helped GM triple its EV sales YoY, albeit from a much smaller base.

With the second quarter nearing its close, all eyes are now on Tesla’s June performance—and whether the company can reverse its declining trend and maintain its leadership in an increasingly competitive EV market.
