Tesla Cybertrucks Join Jalisco Police Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

The Mexican state of Jalisco has added three Tesla Cybertrucks to its police fleet. The Cybertrucks are part of a broader security upgrade that includes 678 new vehicles, and a six-year investment plan aimed at bolstering law enforcement capabilities throughout the region ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro announced the additions as part of the state’s MX$970 million (C$69M/US$50M) investment in new equipment and infrastructure. The new fleet also includes heavily armored Black Mamba Sandcats, which Lemus described as “sort of like tanks.” These vehicles will be distributed across the Guadalajara metropolitan area and other parts of the state in preparation for the influx of tourists and international visitors expected during the World Cup.

The three Cybertrucks, outfitted in matte black wraps with integrated red and blue lights, are designed to serve as mobile command centers. They will patrol key tourist areas such as Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and Tequila during the tournament, which kicks off on June 11, 2026. With SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet providing connectivity, the vehicles are expected to assist in intelligence gathering, surveillance, and emergency response operations.

The move drew praise from the U.S. Embassy in Mexico, which lauded the Cybertruck deployment as a “bold step toward innovation” and an investment in both sustainability and citizen safety. “Jalisco is stepping into the future,” the Embassy wrote on X, highlighting the use of advanced technology in public service.

Despite the fanfare, the purchase has faced criticism from some domestic political figures. Morena Party leaders, including Jalisco Senator Carlos Lomelí, questioned the spending, demanding transparency in the bidding process and doubting the effectiveness of the Cybertrucks in combating the region’s security challenges. Others mocked the high-tech appearance, with Morena’s Erika Pérez sarcastically comparing the fleet to something out of a sci-fi movie.
