Tesla now accepting Cybertruck trade-ins in the U.S.

Tesla has begun accepting Cybertruck trade-ins in the United States, nearly a year and a half after the company first began delivering its electric pickup.

Tesla first started delivering the Cybertruck at a special delivery event in November 2024, but it wasn’t until a few months later that deliveries began in earnest. Those first deliveries were of the Foundation Series trim, a fully spec’d out trim that came with a number of extra goodies and accessories, but also with a US$20,000 premium over the regular pricing.

Nearly a year later Tesla introduced the non-Foundation Series Cybertruck, and most recently launched the least expensive Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) Cybertruck for US$69,990.

However, over all this time, Tesla has not accepted the Cybertruck on trade-ins if owners wanted to get rid of the truck and purchase a different Tesla. That has finally changed, according to a Foundation Series owner Vineet from Princeton, New Jersey, who recently submitted a trade-in request out of curiosity.

To his surprise, Tesla responded with an offer – US$65,400 for his 2024 Cybertruck, which had just over 6,200 miles on the odometer. The truck originally cost $100,000.

This translates to a 35% loss in value—or approximately US$5.63 in depreciation for every mile driven. The trade-in offer also mentioned the option to transfer Full Self-Driving to the new vehicle, an offer that was reintroduced earlier this year for an unspecified amount of time.

The trade-in offer was shared on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum, and while it indicated a high rate of depreciation, other owners noted that offers from third-party companies were even lower. Carvana, for example, reportedly offered just $54,000 for a similar truck. In some cases, Cybertrucks with fewer than 10,000 miles have received offers as low as $49,000 from third-party platforms, a 50% drop in value within a year.

While Vineet appeared content with Tesla’s trade-in offer compared to other options, many Cybertruck owners on the forum voiced frustration. Comments varied from disbelief at the rapid depreciation, to jokes about keeping the truck for life, while others said they’d need to be reincarnated to recoup their investment.

For now, Tesla appears to only be offering trade-in values on the Foundation Series Cybertrucks, and only in the U.S. We have yet to see or hear of any owners in Canada receiving a trade-in value, but if you have, let us know in the comments below.
