New study finds average cost to charge to an electric vehicle in Canada is one of the lowest in the world

A new study shows the average cost to charge an electric vehicle (EV) in Canada is among the lowest in the world.

The team at USwitch, a UK-based price comparison service and switching website, researched the average price of electricity around the world to come up with their findings.

According to their website, they assumed the average time taken to charge an EV was four hours, that it took on average 241 km (150 miles) to get a full charge, and the average EV driver accumulates 16,093km (10,000 miles) in a year.

With that methodology, USwitch found the average cost to charge an EV in Canada is just ~$277 CAD per year., making it the ninth cheapest country in the world in their analysis.

The most expensive country was Denmark, which costs on average $831 CAD to charge an EV over 1 year. The least expensive country was noted as Iran, which costs a shockingly low $25 CAD over the same period.

USwitch’s findings line up almost perfectly with Drive Tesla’s analysis of the 1-year cost of ownership of a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus (SR+) in Canada.

In one year, assuming all of the charging was done at home in British Columbia at the higher Step 2 rate charged by BC Hydro, it cost $278 for nearly 13,000kms.

When comparing that to a conventional gas car, which in our analysis would cost on average $1,660 in gas for the same distance driven over one year, that is a savings of $1,382.
