Tesla announces hiring day in India as Mumbai showroom lease secured

Tesla is moving quickly with its plans to enter the Indian market, marking a significant milestone with the lease of its first showroom in Mumbai. In a move to support its expansion, the automaker has already announced a Sales Recruitment Day, as it gears up to hire talent for its Indian operations.

After years of anticipation and regulatory setbacks, Tesla has officially signed a five-year lease agreement for a showroom in the Maker Maxity building at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), one of Mumbai’s premier business and retail hubs. The lease, which officially started in mid-February, will cost the company approximately half a million dollars in rent for the first year, with an annual 5% increase over the lease period, according to The Times of India.

As Tesla lays the foundation for its Indian operations, the company is set to host a Sales Recruitment Day in Mumbai on March 8, 2025. The hiring event will take place at the Jio World Convention Centre, just a short distance from the upcoming showroom location. Tesla is looking to recruit Sales Advisors to help drive its brand presence in the country.

According to a poster of the hiring day shared by Sawyer Merritt, candidates must have a valid local driving license and a pre-booked appointment for the event. The interview will be conducted in English and in a group format, giving applicants a chance to showcase their communication and customer service skills.

Tesla’s entry into India has been a long, and often frustrating journey. The company initially planned to launch operations in 2022, but faced setbacks due to high tariffs on imported EVs, and a lack of supporting EV infrastructure. However, Tesla renewed its India expansion efforts in 2024, following discussions between Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

With the showroom lease now secured and active hiring underway, Tesla is making concrete steps toward an official launch in the Indian market. Reports also suggest that the company is considering New Delhi as the next showroom location, indicating there are plans to expand to key markets in the country.
