Polestar 3 Gets New Digital Key Features and Free Hardware Boost

Polestar has announced a series of major software and hardware upgrades for the Polestar 3. The Swedish EV brand has rolled out its ninth over-the-air (OTA) software update for the Polestar 3 since its launch in mid-2024, adding several new features. In addition to software improvements, Polestar is also offering existing Polestar 3 owners a complimentary hardware upgrade.

Software Update Adds Digital Key

The latest OTA update introduces several new features, including walk-away locking and digital key functionality for select devices. The Polestar digital key now allows users to lock, unlock, and start their vehicle using their smartphone, eliminating the need for a physical key fob. The digital key can also be shared across platforms, making it easier for multiple users to access and drive the vehicle.

Apple users will be particularly pleased with the addition of car keys in Apple Wallet. This feature allows drivers to lock, unlock, and start their Polestar 3 using an iPhone or Apple Watch. The digital key can be shared with up to five other users through platforms like Messages, Mail, AirDrop, and WhatsApp. Even if the phone battery is depleted, Apple’s Power Reserve feature ensures that the car key remains functional.

Complimentary Hardware Upgrade: NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin Processor

Beyond software updates, Polestar is also enhancing the core computing power of the Polestar 3. Starting with the 2026 model year, the Polestar 3 will transition from the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Xavier processor to the more advanced NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin processor. This upgrade significantly boosts computing power, enabling more sophisticated software features and enhanced performance in areas like active safety and autonomous driving capabilities.

But it won’t be just for new owners. Polestar is offering it as a complimentary hardware upgrade for all existing Polestar 3 owners. Customers will be notified when the new processor is available, and the installation will be performed at authorized Polestar service centers.

Expanding In-Car Entertainment and App Ecosystem

Polestar is also bringing new entertainment options to its vehicles through Google’s Car Ready Mobile Apps program. This initiative allows developers to distribute large-screen-optimized mobile apps directly to car infotainment systems. As a result, Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 owners will soon gain access to an expanded range of apps, including popular titles like Farm Heroes Saga and F1 TV. These apps are already live in the Google Play Store for the Polestar 2, with rollout to the Polestar 3 and 4 expected later this year.
