Municipality on Vancouver Island considering EV charging requirements in new multi-family developments

Nearly 100 electric vehicle drivers descended upon the B.C. Legislature on Monday to support the Victoria Electric Vehicle Association (VEVA), which is proposing “Right to Charge” regulations that would require stratas and landlords to provide EV charging access.

Now just days later, Saanich has announced plans to update existing bylaws to require charging units in all new multi-family homes built in the municipality.

The proposed changes will first have to go to a public hearing for community input. Once approved, all new condos and townhouses built within Saanich must include EV infrastructure.

That means that they have electrical ready to plug in, so that the new renters or owners of the multi-family units. All they need to do is to bring forward their EV car,” Saanich Mayor Fred Haynes told the Times Colonist.

Saanich also recently announced the installation of 20 new EV chargers around the municipality, thanks in part to $100,000 received through the Natural Resources Canada (NRC) Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program.

The municipality has also announced that 11 of their current gas and hybrid vehicles will be replaced by 100% battery electric vehicles.
