Polestar is accelerating the rollout of its Polestar Energy initiative. Building on the success of its pilot projects in the UK and the Netherlands launched last year, Polestar Energy has now expanded to Belgium and Switzerland. Additionally, customers in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Spain can now access smart charging and solar integration, with grid rewards to be introduced in the future.
A Smarter Approach to Home Charging
Polestar Energy is designed to optimize the way EV owners charge their vehicles at home. Using the Polestar Energy app, users can set their preferred charging schedule, and the system will automatically select the most cost-efficient charging periods.
This reduces overall electricity costs by taking advantage of lower rates during off-peak hours and, in some cases, utilizing excess renewable energy when grid demand is low.
According to Polestar, customers can save up to 30% on home charging costs, with additional grid rewards potentially providing up to €300 (C$450) in savings per year.
Bi-Directional Charging
Polestar plans to introduce bi-directional charging capabilities later in 2025, starting with the Polestar 3. This technology will enable vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) functionality, allowing owners to store and redistribute energy from their EV battery.
“Offering a 30% reduction in charging costs at home is a game-changer for our customers,” says Polestar CEO Michael Lohscheller. “As we continue expanding Polestar Energy, we are also preparing to introduce vehicle-to-grid capabilities, which will further enhance the value of EV ownership.”
To facilitate this new feature, Polestar has partnered with Zaptec to provide a compatible bi-directional charging wallbox, which will be available as part of a package that includes installation services. Pricing details are expected to be announced later this year.
Availability and Expansion Plans
Currently, the Polestar Energy app is available for free in the UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Spain. Additional markets are expected to join the program later in 2025 as Polestar continues to expand its energy ecosystem.
