Waymo Expands Robotaxi Service In Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Area

Waymo has significantly expanded its fully autonomous ride-hailing service in California, adding new coverage areas in both Los Angeles County and the San Francisco Bay Area. The Alphabet-owned company announced the expansion on Tuesday, increasing its total commercial service area to over 250 square miles statewide.

Greater Access in Los Angeles

In Los Angeles, Waymo’s driverless electric Jaguar I-Pace vehicles will now operate across more than 120 square miles, stretching from Santa Monica to Downtown and from West Hollywood to Inglewood. Newly added neighborhoods include Playa del Rey, Ladera Heights, Echo Park, Silver Lake, and the entirety of Sunset Boulevard. Riders can also travel directly from Mid-City to Inglewood and Westchester via La Cienega Boulevard and La Brea Avenue.

This marks a major step for Waymo in Southern California, where its fleet began limited operations in November 2023. Despite recent service disruptions due to anti-ICE protests and vandalism in downtown L.A., the company is moving forward with its growth plans while temporarily limiting access to certain central areas for safety reasons.

Bay Area and Silicon Valley Expansion

Simultaneously, Waymo is expanding in the Bay Area. New service areas now include Brisbane, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Millbrae, and Burlingame. In Silicon Valley, service is extending deeper into Palo Alto and Menlo Park, with Mountain View access available to select users.

With more than 600 vehicles now operating in the Bay Area, the company continues to scale up operations in one of the most densely populated and tech-forward regions in the country.

250,000 Rides Per Week and Growing

Waymo’s robotaxi service — called Waymo One — is now available to the general public in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin. The company provides over 250,000 paid rides per week, a fivefold increase since mid-2024. Riders can hail a Waymo via the Waymo One app, and in Austin, through the Uber platform.

Each vehicle is equipped with a suite of cameras, sensors, and lidar to enable fully autonomous navigation. According to Waymo, their self-driving technology results in 88% fewer crashes leading to serious injuries and 93% fewer pedestrian-related incidents compared to the average human driver in the same cities.

What’s Next for Waymo?

Waymo plans to bring its service to Miami, Atlanta, and Washington, D.C. in 2026 and has begun testing manual vehicles in cities like Las Vegas and San Diego. International expansion has also begun, with Tokyo becoming the company’s first market outside the U.S.

With a growing fleet, new partnerships with Hyundai and Toyota, and a new 239,000-square-foot production facility in Phoenix, Waymo is pushing ahead to make fully autonomous transport a daily reality for more urban commuters.
