Volkswagen negotiating deal for Huawei’s autonomous driving unit: Report

Volkswagen (VW) is eyeing a potential deal with China’s Huawei to purchase their autonomous driving unit.

According to a report by Manager Magazin, the potential deal could be worth billions of euros.

Based on information from anonymous sources, the report stated that the two companies have been in negotiations for several months. The deal will also reportedly involve technology VW is not yet proficient in. (via Reuters)

News of the potential autonomous driving tech deal comes just after VW chief executive Herbert Diess said the German automaker was seeking new partnerships to boost their expertise in software.

Diess also said that although LiDAR technology is still expensive, he believes it is the only way to offer redundant perception to cameras and is crucial in developing a Level 3 autonomous driving solution.

Lidar technology is still expensive, but todays the only way to offer redundant perception to the 360 camera systems which are a must. Safety is really crucial in autonomous driving. For level 3 driving you need redundant perception.

Diess made the comments during an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit.
